Alternative Engagement Ring with Sri-Lankan sapphires and rough diamond
This bespoke ring was created for a client looking for something alternative and deeply personal. Rather than following a traditional engagement ring design, we focused on creating a piece that felt organic, individual and full of character.
At the centre of the ring is a raw sapphire, paired with two outer stones: a rough diamond and a sapphire. Together, the stones create an asymmetrical composition with texture, colour and individuality.
The sapphires were cut for me in Sri Lanka by artisan stone cutters I have worked with for a number of years. I am always drawn to stones that feel slightly irregular or unexpected, stones with inclusions, unusual proportions or subtle shifts in colour that make them feel alive.
When working on bespoke pieces like this, the design often evolves around the stones themselves. Rather than forcing materials into a rigid idea, I prefer to respond to their natural shapes and characteristics. That process allows each piece to develop its own personality.
This ring was actually remade during the making process in order to refine the construction and proportions. That is sometimes part of bespoke work, stepping back, reassessing and allowing the piece the time it needs to fully resolve. I believe that refinement is an important part of craftsmanship, particularly when creating one of a kind pieces by hand.
I have always been drawn to alternative engagement rings because they allow for a greater sense of individuality and emotional connection. I’m far more interested in jewellery that feels personal and expressive than in perfection or uniformity.
The combination of raw sapphire, rough diamond, asymmetry and hand-cut sapphires gives this ring a quiet sense of movement and texture that feels very true to my work as a whole.
