Designing a Bespoke Pendant to Hold Love, Loss and Family

There are some commissions that stay with you.Not because of the materials, or even the finished piece, but because of what they are asked to hold. This bespoke sapphire and diamond pendant was one of those.

Tamara Gomez Bespoke 18ct Yellow Gold Pendant with Diamonds and Sapphires – 50th Birthday Gift 1

A Quiet Beginning

The commission began with a conversation over Zoom.

Her husband contacted me wanting to create something truly special for her 50th birthday. Not just a beautiful piece of jewellery, but something meaningful that represented their family.

He was gentle and thoughtful, and it was immediately clear how much he loved his wife. He didn’t say it outright, but it was there in the way he spoke, in the care he took over every detail.

He told me they had three children. And then, more quietly, that one of them had passed away.We didn’t go into the details. We didn’t need to.

What Jewellery Can Hold

I lost both of my sisters to leukaemia when I was young.

So I understand something about that kind of grief. Not fully because no one ever does, but enough to recognise how it changes the shape of a family. How absence and presence exist side by side. How love doesn’t disappear, it simply changes form.

Designing Something Meaningful

This wasn’t about creating something decorative.

It needed to feel natural, connected, and strong, something that could be worn every day without feeling heavy, but still carry real meaning.

We chose a combination of sapphires and diamonds, each stone representing a member of the family.

Rather than placing them in a formal arrangement, I worked with a softer, more organic composition, allowing the stones to sit closely together, like a small constellation.

I used my signature molten-inspired aesthetic to give the gold a fluid, natural quality, so the piece feels shaped rather than constructed.

The Finished Pendant

The final piece has a soft, almost cloud-like form.

It sits close to the skin, understated and easy to wear, but carries something much deeper beneath the surface.

A piece that holds love, memory, and connection — quietly.

Considering a Bespoke Piece

I create bespoke jewellery for clients looking for something personal and one of a kind, whether to mark a milestone, a relationship, or something more complex.
