These bespoke stud earrings were created as an everyday pair, designed to bring a subtle but distinctive pop of colour.Handcrafted in 18ct yellow gold, each earring is set with a freeform purple sapphire in a simple rub over setting, allowing the rich gold to contrast beautifully with the soft violet tones of the stones.
The Story Behind the Piece
My client wanted a pair of earrings she could wear every day, but with something a little more distinctive than a plain stud. She was looking for a piece that felt simple and easy to live with, while still carrying colour and individuality.
I selected these purple sapphires for her from a group of stones I had cut in Sri Lanka by artisan lapidarists. Their freeform shapes gave the pair a soft, organic character that felt both personal and understated.
The Design Process
The design was kept deliberately simple so the sapphires could remain the focus. Each stone was framed in a smooth rubover setting in 18ct yellow gold, creating a clean outline and a warm contrast against the cool purple of the sapphires. The freeform cuts give the earrings a slight asymmetry and individuality, while the overall design keeps them balanced, wearable, and easy to pair with other jewellery.
The Finished Piece
The result is a pair of earrings that feel quiet, refined, and full of character. The gold settings bring warmth and softness, while the purple sapphires add a subtle flash of colour that lifts the piece without overwhelming it.A bespoke pair of earrings designed for everyday wear, with just enough individuality to make them feel special.
