This bespoke sapphire and diamond pendant was commissioned as a 50th birthday gift and a deeply personal piece designed to represent a family of five.
Handcrafted in 18ct yellow gold, the pendant brings together diamonds and sapphires in a soft, molten composition. Each stone was chosen to symbolise a member of the family, creating a piece that feels both intimate and enduring.
The Story Behind the Commission
The commission began with a conversation over Zoom.
Her husband came to me wanting to create something truly special for her 50th birthday. He was gentle and thoughtful, and it was immediately clear how much he loved his wife. He didn’t need to say it directly, it was there in the way he spoke, in the care he took over every detail.
He told me they had three children. And then, more quietly, that one of them had passed away.We didn’t go into the details. We didn’t need to. It was simply there, present, and deeply felt.
I lost both of my sisters to leukaemia when I was young. So I understand something about that kind of loss. How it stays with you. How it reshapes a family, but also holds it together in a different way. That understanding stayed with me throughout the making of this piece.
The Design Process
This pendant was never going to be purely decorative.
It needed to hold something more complex, love, memory, presence, and absence without becoming heavy or overwhelming to wear.
We chose a combination of diamonds and sapphires, each with its own character. The stones were arranged in a way that felt connected rather than structured, like a family rather than a fixed design.
I used my signature molten-inspired aesthetic to bring the piece together, allowing the gold to feel fluid and organic, rather than rigid or overly structured.
Each stone was carefully set to sit closely within the composition, so the overall piece feels natural and connected, rather than formal or fixed.
The Finished Piece
The final pendant has a soft, almost cloud-like form.
It sits close to the skin, understated and easy to wear, while carrying a depth of meaning that is not immediately visible. A piece that can be lived in daily, quietly holding a story of love, loss, and connection.
