The Story Behind the Piece
This ring was commissioned by a client looking for something alternative and deeply individual.
Together, we selected a combination of Sri Lankan sapphires and a rough diamond, choosing stones that felt visually and emotionally right for the piece rather than working to traditional matching rules.
The sapphires were cut for me in Sri Lanka by artisan lapidarists I’ve worked with for a number of years. Each stone carried its own natural inclusions, tonal shifts, and irregular shape, which became central to the design process.
During the making process, the ring was completely remade to refine the construction and proportions. That slower process of adjusting, rethinking, and rebuilding is often an important part of bespoke work, allowing the final piece to feel fully resolved.
The Design Process
The design evolved directly around the stones themselves.
Rather than forcing symmetry, I wanted the composition to feel balanced but organic, with each stone sitting in softly sculpted rubover settings that emphasise their natural forms. The cool tones of the 14ct white gold complement the shifting blues of the sapphires while allowing the rough diamond to add texture and contrast.
The result is a contemporary alternative engagement ring with an understated sculptural quality and a strong sense of individuality.
