This bespoke abacus ring was commissioned as a custom piece of tactile jewellery, inspired by my ongoing series of kinetic abacus rings.
Handcrafted in gold and sterling silver, the design features a textured silver bead that moves freely along the ring, creating a subtle, interactive quality.
The Idea Behind the Piece
My client was drawn to the discreet movement and tactility of my abacus rings, a small body of work I have developed over the years, where a central element moves gently on an axis.
She wanted a piece that felt engaging to wear. Something she could touch and move throughout the day, without it feeling distracting or overtly functional.
The Design Process
The design focused on contrast and simplicity.
A softly textured sterling silver bead was created to add both visual and tactile interest. This sits between warm gold elements, allowing the materials to work together — cool and warm, matte and softly reflective.
The structure of the ring was carefully balanced so that the bead moves freely, while still feeling secure and integral to the piece.
The Finished Piece
The result is a ring that is minimal, wearable, and quietly distinctive.
The moving silver bead introduces a gentle, meditative quality, something to return to throughout the day. A piece that invites interaction, without demanding attention.
